THE WINTER RIDING SCHOOL

In 1718 Vienna was at long last able to celebrate the end of the Turkish Siege whilst Prince Eugene of Savoy had secured extensive lands for the Habsburg monarchy. Subsequently, these peaceful times enabled art-loving Emperor Charles VI to commission the building of numerous splendid buildings in Vienna: St. Charles’s Church (Karlskirche), the court library (today’s National Library) und the Winter Riding School of the Spanish Riding School.

During the years 1729 to 1735 Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach constructed the magnificent baroque building on the site of the old “Paradeisgartl”. Chiefly intended for horse-riding, a great number of courtly and equestrian festivities were held in the baroque riding hall, i.e. Maria Theresia’s famous Ladies’ Carousel, oratorios, masquerade balls, jousts, town hall meetings, and many more.

Within a short space of time and owing to state-of-the-art technology, the Winter Riding School can be transformed into a unique event location which meets all the modern-day requirements.
